Most people never see a Nepenthes open. I had a job that had me in the shower at 5 AM and I happened to see several open. The pitcher is sealed while it matures. If you hold it up to the light you can see the liquid inside. When it pops open it is very sudden and the peristome, which was inside the pitcher, unfurls quickly.
Nepenthes truncata growing in bathroom windowsill. Not an ideal environment and is probably the reason that the peristom dies when the new pitchers open. It's probably just not humid enough.
